The Summit Fire

I finally made it home for a visit, and what do I get? A giant wildfire coming towards our house!! I sent out an email with a bunch of pictures that my dad took from the neighbors, but if you did not get it and want to see them, let me know. Also here are some some pretty cool pictures for the SJ Mercury News.

We are still doing ok here at the house, but we are packed and ready to leave if/when needed. The flames are getting pretty close; less than about 2 miles from here, but we have our fingers crossed. I was supposed to be going back to SD tonight, but seeing as we can't leave the house, I did not make my flight. Instead, I should be flying home Saturday night.

I will post updates as they come.

Finally Done (Half Way Done at Least)...

I have finally made it through my first year of graduate school. Only one more to I hope at least. Then what?? I have no idea...maybe another Master's, maybe a PhD, maybe take some time off and go back later, who really knows?!? I have a while to decide that one.

On a happier note, I am finally going home for a few days, leaving on Sunday night. Too bad I am going to most likely miss Susannah in town (evil eye going out to Susannah!!), but that just gives me more of a reason to go to NYC (which, I will do one of these days, I swear)! I will return to San Diego on Thursday just in time to work for a few days, then I take off again...this time for Portland to see Angie!!!! Woohoo!

It's gonna be a really busy couple of weeks, but it will be a lot of fun, seeing my family (Marlie and the Fat Man too!!!!!!), and Angie. And when it is all over, I am coming home to start working full time! Gotta love those summer months with no student loans!!

No school til Spetember!!!!!!!!!! Yippee!!!! ;)

When did i get old??

I usually have the whole lab to myself on the lab on the weekends, so naturally I crank up some tunes and have a little fun rocking out. So, today I was listening to the radio rather than my ipod just to switch it up, and what do I hear? "Vintage" weekend....and what do I hear...the songs that came out while I was in high school! Since when is music from the '90s considered to be "vintage"?? Man, that makes me feel a bit old....

More Irish Entertainment

I finally got a few more videos of the Irish dancers uploaded to youtube!!

....and my favorite bit

The Joining of the Irish and the Lithuanian

This was the weekend of the big wedding! I flew out to Chicago this past Thursday morning, with a nice stop in Denver. My cousin picked me up at the airport and we went back to her place and had a little get together with some of the wedding party....Then Friday was when it got really busy!

Friday morning the bridal party went to the spa for nails fun and the groomsmen went to play golf. Then we headed for the rehearsal and dinner. That is where the fun began for me....there were soooo many of my family members there; most of who I had never met. The rehearsal went well; I was the first one down the aisle, so that was a bit scary.

The actual wedding took place on Saturday, and we got a pretty early start. We left the hotel for our hair appointments The flower girl was so excited because she got to come along with the big girls to do her hair. And, she was cute! One the way back to the hotel, some of us got lost...did ot go over big with my cousin, Erin. Opps, but it all worked out in the end. We got back to the hotel for make-up. We had a Mac make-up artist there who used an airbrush, and let me say, I do not like wearing make-up, but it was actually awesome!! It went on so light it was like it was not even there.

Once we were done and ready, the bridal party took a land yacht to the church. Wow, was that thing great. Marble floors, decked out sound system, mural on the ceiling, and a good amount of alcohol. And on the way to the church it began to pour! But, once we arrive and the wedding got started, it was beautiful. And more importantly, I did not trip coming down the aisle....would that not have been the best way to start a wedding?!? The ceremony as in a Lithuanian Catholic church (his family is Lithuanian) and was a bit on the religious side, but beautiful none the less. Once the ceremony was over it was picture time at the church before we got kicked out for confessional. Of course when it was time to leave the rain returned, but we got to take the land yacht to the reception hall...We were out of the liquor in about 10 minutes!

Once at the reception hall it was time for more pictures...and man did we take a lot of them. The wedding photographers took over 1200 pictures throughout the wedding! But, we had a lot of fun with them. The reception finally got started about 3 hours later, which was great as well because it brought together both Irish and Lithuanian traditions. Her dad (my uncle) gave a great speech that made just about everyone cry. The reception went on until about 1130, when we basically got kicked out of the hall, so we headed back to the hotel to continue the party in the lobby where we were introduced to a homemade Lithuanian honey liquor. Just about the strongest thing that I have ever tried, but it tasted like apple pie...cinnamon and nutmeg. My dad and I did not even get back to the room until after 3am.

My dad took me to the airport yesterday for my flight home, which seemed like the longest flight of my life. I was so tired I just want to sleep, but couldn't on the plane. Once I finally landed into San Diego (late) i made my way to the shuttle to get back to my car. Lucky me I got this driver that was the old gay man that decided that he needed to vent his entire life story to me...then asked me if I wanted to be his roommate!! Oh my!! I just wanted to get home!

But, I finally made it home, ran in the door and crashed for about 12 hours! But, I had to be up early this morning to finish a project for school...that is done now, so it is relax time!!

Oh...a little funny story. My dad flew out to St. Louis so he could drive his mom up to the wedding. Friday morning there was an earthquake in southern IL!!! He must have brought them with him!! It was just the first of many! Good going!

Next stop is home in May...then off to Portland to see Angie!! Woohoo!!!!

Summer in April!

It is almost 6pm and is still hanging steady at just about 90 degrees.....and its only April!! Woohoo, but I hate to think what this means for the summer!

I leave for Chicago on Thursday morning!! Just about the worst timing ever at school....I have so many groups projects going, with two of them due on Monday, but I am so excited about the wedding! Granted, I have never met at least 90% of the people who will be there, I have not seen the ones I have met in so long I can't even count the years. And, I have a super cool dress to wear, get to spent a day with the bridesmaids getting our nails done, and get my hair and makeup done before the wedding. It should be a grand old time. I will post pictures when I get back!

Once I get back I only have 3 weeks of classes left (or something like that)...Than I am flying home for a few days, coming back to work a few days, then flying off again to go to Portland to visit Miss Angie!!!!!!! Yipee!!

Gotta Love LA!

My friend Claire and I have been waiting for months for the Matchbox Twenty concert that we bought tickets to months ago....and it was finally last night!! Let me start by saying that it was quite possibly the best concert I have EVER been to, and I have been to my fair share of concerts! So I left work a few hours early yesterday and we left on our little adventure to the Staples Center in LA and got there early enough to get dinner, then we made our way through downtown LA to the Staples Center, which was kinda cool because I had never been there before. The first band that came on, Mutemath, was pretty decent, but more than anything, very entertaining. They were performing all kinds of acrobatics and did a really cool drum thing at the end. At the end of their set, though, they were like are you all ready for the next band!?! And who come out next....freaking Alanis Morissette!!!!! We had no idea she was here, so we were so excited. She was AWESOME!!! After her came Matchbox Twenty, and they played for 2 full hours! Man was that a great show! The only downfall....we did not leave LA until after 1130pm (its an hour and a half drive home), and we had a midterm this morning. So worth it, though! Good thing the midterm went well!!

While I am on the subject of shows, last week we went to see Bob Saget and 4th & B downtown (San Diego that is)! I knew ahead of time that he was a very vulgar man, but man is he ever!! I spent the night crying because I was laughing so hard, while at the same time just shocked at some of the things coming out of his mouth...not really shocked; it was more like, "did he really just say that?" Come to think of it....that show was the night before our midterm for that weekend long class, which actually turned out to be a pretty not so bad class! Now I just have to get through class tonight, then I finally have a day off tomorrow!! Woohooo, its a about time for one of those!

The Looooooong Weekend

This weekend to come is going to be a really long weekend...actually I don't have a real day off for at least two and a half weeks. But, this of my teachers had to take a personal leave this semester for whatever reason, but of course he teaches one of the most important classes of the degree, Public Health Law and Ethics. Because it is such an important class, they could not just cancel it, so they decided to hire another professor for the course. The bad news, she lives in South Carolina...and instead of the class being taught over 17 weeks it will be taught in 3 looooooong days!!! Now, I have read a little bit of the book, and it does not seem too bad, but any class taught in 3 days is not good. Oh my!!!!! Wish me luck!!

Who Would Have Ever Thunk It?

I have always been a PC girl, never owned a Mac...But today I invested in a new MacBook laptop for myself. Who would have thought the day would ever come!?! I have been hearing really good things about them from my dad and many others, and even better, I got a discount through my school. So far I am really liking it, so we will see!!! Yeah me!! Oh, the wonders of having a real job! ;)

It's Jordan!!

So, I have known about this band (30 Seconds to Mars) for quite a while now, and even knew that Jared Leto was the lead singer (and his brother is the drummer), but it was just recently that I saw one of their videos. Very strange to see the guy who played Jordan Catalano in make up and rocking out....oh well he still looks good!!!

And here is another one I found by a band called 10 Years. There is another version of this video with Brad Renfro, the singer's cousin. Apparently this song is about his (Brad's) heroin addiction. Who would have known? Anyway, this version was done for Amnesty International...

Feels Like Summer!

I just wanted to start by saying it is 75 degrees outside right now....and supposed to be 80 tomorrow!!! Haha!

Now, I'm sorry that still have not really posted much recently, but I am so unbelievably busy. I only have one day off a week between school and work, and that is not really a day off because it is mostly spent doing homework. But, excuses excuses, I know. Oh well, not much has really happened that is too terribly interesting anyway.

I am, however, going to be participating in a HUGE emergency drill here in San Diego (I hope, the final planning for the few of us is in the works, including how much we will really be able to be involved, hands-on or spectator), which officially takes place in July, but I will be attending some planning events between now and then too. The drill is called Golden Phoenix and is not just a drill here, but it involves agencies at all levels: local, state, federal (FBI and CDC!!!), and probably some international, at the very least Mexico. The simulation will be a real time release of a bioterrorism agent, althoough I'm not sure if we are supposed to say exactly what agent yet. I can't wait for the real drill this summer. Of course we will not be allowed in on all of the event, or details, because a lot of it remains classified, but it should still be fun! The plan is, for me at least, to get in contact with some of the CDC people who are playing in the drill and latch myself to them (if they agree) so I can see how such an agency would be involved in such an event. And, since the CDC is where I want to end up, that would be a perfect match!! I don't know many of the scenario details yet, but I will post about them when I can!!!

Oh, on another brother turns 22 next week!!! Man does that make me fell like I'm getting old!

It's About Time

I have not written anything in a while, so I figured that it was about time! I have been so busy/lazy for that last few weeks....Angie came to visit, then I started my new job, and then I started school today. Angie's visit alone was tiring because we walked all over, but we had SOOOO much fun while she was, shopping, the Bodies Experience, more shopping, some outlet shopping, Disneyland, and I am sure I am forgetting something too.

The day after she left I started my new lab job, an so far I am really liking it!! I am working in a microbiology lab again (finally) working in water quality testing. May not sound like fun, but let me tell you, you learn a lot about drinking water (this may not be a good thing though). Plus, we screen samples from all the big animal parks and zoos around! Pretty interesting.

I started school today, and I am so not ready to go back yet. I may have been bored over the 6 week break, but the idea of having to do all that work again is not too exciting. But, I have gotten a little bored over this period. My first class today was HIV/AIDS Epidemiology, and I think that it will be so very cool! The professor seems very good, and its a great and interesting topic. The second class today was Public Health Law and Ethics....not going to be cool. I don't even want to go into that one; I'll just get frustrated. So, we will skip on to the Happy Hour outing of the night. There are only like 6 of us first years in this program, and we are all in the PH Law class, so after the news we got there, we decided to go out for drinks. We had so much fun!!! Two words....Strawberry Margaritas!!! Whoohoo! I have one more class tomorrow, then two on Monday, so hopefully they go better than the PH Law or I may be drinking a lot more ;)

Not much else has really happened lately, so I think that it is time to retire to bed and the tv....

So I found this article about a newly discovered rodent and found it rather frightening. So, I thought that I would share.

I know I have not posted anything for a while, but i have been busy!! Angie came to visit last week and left yesterday and my first day of my new job was today. I will post more soon, but at the moment I am BEAT. Sorry!!

Jump into the Real World...Finally!!!

Those who know me know that i am about as big of a science nerd as can be....and that I am happiest when I am in a lab and can play!!! Well, after looking since I got here in August, I have finally found a real job in a lab...and they want to pay me a pretty good deal of money, and work around my school schedule, etc. It is basically a weekend job, but with the opportunity to work more during the week if my school schedule allows it, and then maybe become full time over the summer. WHOOHOO!!!! So, on Friday I have to go get poked and prodded for a medical exam, blood work, and a drug test and then a mountain of paper work, then my official first day is probably next Thursday the 17th, the day after Angie leaves me here. Finally a real job that I can be excited about doing!! Yeah me!!!

The Amazing Erupting Geyser

This morning (or afternoon rather) when I got up, I did what I normally do...empty my overly full bladder. But, this morning was I in for a surprise. Oh yes!! I go to flush the toilet, and it drains as it should, but then here comes the geyser...I have seriously never seen so much water come out of such a small thing. Thank the lord that this was all clean water spraying out everywhere......and I mean everywhere....because it almost came up to my ankles. Holy shit...I can not even explain my reaction. I had just woken up and had not had my orange juice (my coffee) yet, and here I am in the bathroom with water spewing everywhere. So what did I do....naturally, I just stood there staring for about 30 seconds trying to comprehend exactly what was happening. Then I ran out of my bathroom for towels, towels, and more towels. Needless to say, it took me 40 minutes and almost every towel I own to get all the water off the floor, then another almost 2 hours in the laundromat washing all those towels in the hottest water possible with an insane amount of soap.

I spoke to the manager of the complex to see if someone had reported a blockage or something to explain the eruption I witnessed this morning, but no such luck determining the cause. But, I do feel lucky because she said the same thing happened at a building down the street, but their experience was not such a clean eruption....and it was right before Christmas and no plumbers would come out to fix it....they eventually decided to vacate, but luckily they found a plumber brave enough to fix it for them!!

Now that I look back at it, it was quite comical, but lets just pray that I NEVER have to deal with an erupting toilet again!! Not a pleasant way to greet the new day!
